The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is the regulatory authority responsible for ensuring the pricing of traded goods is based on accurate measurement.
Many frozen seafood products contain what is known as a ‘glaze’. Glaze is the water sprayed onto a product during the freezing process to act as a protective coating and stop dehydration.
Over the past years, it has been common and accepted practice for the glaze to be included in the net weight measurements of seafood products.
The NMI have announced that from 1 July 2018, all seafood products must be weighed using the Frozen Fish Method whereby the glaze can no longer be included in a product’s net weight.
This across the board regulation will ensure all products in the marketplace will revert back to being on a level playing field, increasing transparency for you, the customer.
Bidfood has consistently supported the Frozen Fish Method and as such all exclusive to Bidfood seafood products have always been measured at a true net product weight (excluding glaze).
Existing inventory of our supplier products not currently compliant with the new method of measurement will be run down over the coming months to the end of July 2018.
All Bidfood suppliers have been advised of the legislation and the 1 July deadline of conformance and have undertaken to adhere to this new standard.
We will keep customers informed of any further development.
